Nota d'usoQuando l'aggettivo last è seguito da un'espressione di tempo (es. week, month ecc.) con il significato di “scorso”, non va preceduto dall'articolo determinativo the: They left last week, sono partiti la settimana scorsa (non They left the last week). The last week, con l'articolo determinativo, viene usato in frasi come The last week in May, l'ultima settimana di maggio. Quando si parla di una catena di eventi che si susseguono, l'articolo viene usato in combinazione con previous o before: We went to Sicily but the week before (o the previous week) we were Naples, siamo andati in Sicilia, ma la settimana precedente eravamo a Napoli. -

Nota d'usoI sostantivi come council sono chiamati collettivi perché indicano un gruppo di persone. In inglese possono essere seguiti dal verbo al singolare o al plurale, a seconda del contesto e di ciò che vuole esprimere chi parla. In generale, se si pensa al sostantivo in modo impersonale, si sceglie il singolare: The council is responsible for social services, il comune è responsabile dei servizi sociali. Se invece si pensa alle singole persone che fanno cose diverse all'interno del gruppo, si sceglie il plurale: The council, who were much criticised last year, have outsourced refuse collection, il comune, che l'anno scorso è stato molto criticato, ha dato in appalto la raccolta dei rifiuti.
